Ok, next on the list “Are there different kinds of stress?” Oh yeah there is!! Take a look.
Are there different kinds of stress?
The first two we’ll look at are – EUSTRESS and DISTRESS.
- Eustress – is a stressor that is perceived as positive – promotion, getting married, reaching a goal.
- Distress – is a stressor that is perceived as negative – injury, illness, divorce.
Two more worth mentioning …
v ACUTE & CHRONIC STRESS - Daily stresses can be acute or chronic. Stress comes and goes with just being alive and getting by on this planet. Stress is as individual as your fingerprint, but all of us deal with the next two every day.
- Short term stress with a quick resolution.
- This is the type of stress our bodies like the best.
- An example might be a “near” accident that you avoid.
- Prolonged & unrelieved stress also called “cumulative stress”.
- This can be a result of the wear & tear of too many demands.
- An example might be BURNOUT, when a person loses energy & interest because of unrelieved stress.
Chronic stress being the most detrimental of the two – be aware of the consequences and signs of Chronic Stress.
- Depression & anxiety
- Heart disease, High BP, stroke
- Obesity & eating disorders
- Women will exhibit menstrual issues
- Sexual dysfunction for both men & women
- Gastrointestinal problems – ulcers …
- Easily agitated and frustrated
- Feeling overwhelmed – like you’re losing control
- Difficulty relaxing
- Low self-esteem, lonely or depressed
- Avoiding others
- Low energy
- Upset stomach
- Loss of sexual desire and / or ability
- Nervousness / shaky
- Frequent colds and infections
- Constant worrying
- Forgetfulness & disorganization
- Inability to focus
- Bad decision making / poor judgment
- Being pessimistic
- Racing thoughts
- Changes in appetite – not eating or eating too much - stress eating
- Procrastination & avoiding responsibilities
- The start of or the increased use of drugs & alcohol
- Nervous behavior – nail biting, fidgeting, pacing
Stress is part of life – there’s no way to eliminate it. What matters most is how you handle it. The best thing you can do to prevent stress overload and the health consequences that come with it, is to know how to recognize the signs and symptoms … oh yeah … AND EXERCISE … the #1 counter to stress!!!
